How are Put Out's Determined/How to score this scenario

Post by dwbmarvin » Fri Oct 02, 2009 2:03 am

I scored a game and have a situation where there was a runner on 1B. Fly Ball to shallow RF was dropped by the RF, who then picked up the ball and threw to second for a force out. I scored the play as an Error on the Right fielder, and then for the runner on 1B as a Force out. The scorebook reads FO8 which technically should be a Force Out 8-6 but I don't get the opportunity to score it that way unless I change the play to a tag out (which technically is not correct since the runner was never tagged, he was forced out 8-6). The statistics don't count this out as a Put Out so the game statistics only reflect 20 Put Outs. (we play 7 inning games) How can I best score that play.

I should have also let you know I have exported my results to you.

With force outs in the current version of iScore, we don't ask for "touches" again, so when there is an error, you don't get a chance to enter the touches for a force out after the fact. We assume the touches entered for the batter are the touches to use for the force out, but in the case of an error, this is not correct. The best way to score this to get the stats right for now is to use the Tag Out option which lets you enter the touches again.

We have actually fixed this for our next release (2.0.3) which we will be posting very soon. That will allow you to enter the "touches" for a force out as well. If you enter it as a Tag Out for now, you will be able to correct it to a force out when the next release comes out.

Rule 10.12(d)(4) states that no error shall be charged when any fielder, after fumbling a ground ball or dropping a batted ball that is in flight or a thrown ball, the fielder recovers the ball in time to force out a runner at any base;
in your example, the runner was forced out at second. Therefore the fielder is exempt from the error. I think the best way to score this is a fielder's choice, 8-6.

Thanks for the rule update, I'm sure my player's going to be much happier not charged with the error, but rather gains the put out. (Force).

Second the note of appreciation, nicett.

I almost wrote in on this subject to say "don't score the error if you got the force out" but didn't, as I didn't have a cite to any rule. My response was purely base on the general rule of thumb that you don't score an error unless there is a base advanced that cannot be accounted for unless you score the error. In this case, the situation after the play is exactly the same as it would have been but for the bobble - out recorded, runner on first (just the batter replaced the runner who was forced).

Glad to know there is a rule to back up my scorer's intuition.
