Filtering

Post by PetroGuy » Thu May 20, 2010 11:58 am

OK, now I'm just being a pest. I realize my next request is a lot more work and would be a lower priority if anyone even wanted it done at all. I would like to see additional filtering capabilities in the Team Websites.

For starters, I would like to filter both the Games and Statistics sections by opponent (i.e. just see the games or stats for the good guys against Team X). This would be of most use when playing multiple times against the same team which is not uncommon.

Another common filter would be date based. A couple of calendar type controls similar to what we see on every travel site around could bracket a date range.

I know I can do this manually using leagues. However, you'll notice that these two filters would be based on already searchable data. It would eliminate the need for the user to manually set up as many leagues. These could be simple AND queries that combine with the league already selected. In other words, I could see stats for all games in League A against Team X. These two filters are two of the three most common ways to examine the data that I am asked about (the third being by tournament and that is best handled by leagues). I am always asked, "How did little Bobby do in February?" or "How did we do against the Evil Monsters", etc....

To keep the screen real estate to a minimum, these filters could be accessed by something simple like a plus sign next to the current league filter box. Hitting this plus sign would make the new filters appear below the league box, hitting the minus sign would clear them and make them go away.

This is really starting to get more into "analytics" and was not the intent of the team websites. The team websites are really intended to be a portal where people can go to see information about that team --- the stats, game results, a home page, calendar, etc. It is really intended to have functionality similar to eteamz, and other such sites. We have the added benefit that the stats/games can be updated with one click.

Doing any kind of analytics would be a separate portal with a separate audience. Yes, there could be some potential overlap, but we have to be careful to not overcomplicate the intended purpose of the team website as it will lead to complexity for the simplest users.

Thank you for the suggestions, and we will continue to add additional functionality to all parts of the system, and analytics will likely be an area we explore further in the future.
