I went to the statistics page of a game and emailed the stats to myself. The stats appeared in the body of the email and there was no attachment. Is there a different way to send them as excel attachment so that I can open them in excel?

If you go to Game Manager, and go to your game there, when you click email, there are options for what you want to include... one of those options is Excel. It will be sent as an attachment.
