How do you add a picture to the home page?

When editing the home page, there is an icon to insert images in the "toolbar". You can use any URL of an image on the internet to insert it into your site. If you upload images to your "Photos" tab, they will also be listed in a dropdown that you can select from on the insert image dialog.
