Grounder to picher who makes trow to first in plenty of time for put out but first baseman isn't on the bag and makes no attempt to tag bag or runner. Is this an error or hit due to player indifference

This should be scored as an error on the first baseman (E3).

From the Official MLB Scoring Rules
(a) The official scorer shall charge an error against any fielder:
(3) when such fielder catches a thrown ball or a ground ball in time to put out the batter-runner and fails to tag first base or the batter-runner;

Defensive indifference should rarely be used in scoring and would only apply when the defensive team is leading by such a large margin that they make no attempt to put out a batter or runner due to the fact it will not affect the game's end result.

Agreed with the proviso that defensive indifference applies only to stolen base attempts, because that is how the term is used.
I started to create a couple of play situations in which the defense made no attempt to retire a batter or runner because it would not affect the end result, but it seemed like making mud to clarify a point, which is not a good thing.

Do not forget to credit the pitcher with an assist. Actually it would be 1E 3.
