Add Extra Batter to Lineup During Game

Post by RIOT Coach » Thu Oct 03, 2013 1:10 pm

In softball friendlies and showcases it is pretty common to add extra batters into the lineup during the game. So even though you started the game batting 10, you may end up batting 12 or 13. Any way that you could add that option instead of having to handle every subsequent batter as a substitution for the rest of the game?

You can add players to the END of the lineup during the game. Go to Misc -> Show Starting Lineup, and you can add a player with Batting = YES to the end of the lineup and everything will score fine. If you try and "insert" a player to a spot other than the end, it will mess up the stats for the previous at bats because stats are stored by batting lineup position (which allows post game editing of missed substitutions).

Welcome to the community @RIOT Coach

For those reading along, particularly long time users.. This is a noteworthy point by support.. B/c In early versions of iScore , you could not do this .. Add a walk up player to end of line up.

The caveat is This is something you have to do 'real time' ( not post game in pitch by pitch)..

By the way If you need to later reduce the number of players batting (ie someone leaves) you use the misc skip batter feature ...( not misc show starting line up)

This is a great call out by support. It takes some of the pressure of scorers have to guess how many batters the other team has. (But you still need to pay attention and get the last to first 'turn' of the batting order correct. Else your scorecard gets 'confused')

Thanks for the replies. I knew that you could add a batter to the end of the lineup. The problem is that the additional batters are often inserted into the middle of the lineup, especially at showcases. So it sounds like the only solution is to enter a substitution for every batter for the rest of the game. If you could figure out a way to allow middle of the order additions, I know that would be appreciated on the softball side of the world.

You can do that in iscore.

But Because the action is non standard, the way you need to handle that in iscore is also going to be a bit non standard... Sorry

Example
you have 10 batting and number 11 walks up and needs to bat in the next available slot.. in 9th hole..

Step 1. You would still add the person in the staring line up to the 11th hole (to extend the number batting from 10 to 11) -- MISC > SHOW STARTING LINE UP).

step 1b. while in Line Up screen make sure you have at least one player set Bat=no (even if you have to add a dummy player). this enables the offense sub screen which is your next step,

step 2. from scoreing screen make offense substitutions to put new person in 9 hole and roll others down. ( do this by taping a batter icon, select offense on top of sub screen, get the screen with bat line up along the top).. move new player from 11th hole to 8th hole, and original 9 to 10 ,and orig 10 to 11.. Etc. ..

The score card and stats will track correctly.

Yes that sounds a bit cumbersome, but really not to bad and kinda amazing the program can handle situations that are non conforming.

Hope that helps..

Thanks again for that reply. I share your passion for iScore, so it's fun to get into the nuances of the app. I guess I didn't fully explain the issue that I'm trying to deal with. Unfortunately, it's not a single batter addition or deletion during a game. It's multiple additions and deletions throughout the course of a game, especially in a showcase. The way that I have handled it is to tap the batter icon at the start of every at bat for the remainder of the game and make the offensive substitution. It's a bit of a pain and it makes for a very messy scorecard, but it does accurately track the stats all the way through. As I think it through a little more, that is probably the only way to handle it. If you have any other great ideas though, I'm all ears.

I am familiar with multiple switch showcase / camp events.. I do not know a better way to handle .... not sure how they could program it to handle it better either.. but because iScore has the "score what you see approach" and does not required paired substitutions (like MLB rules require) ..we can do this if the effort is worth it..

the best thing i have found is to get some 'spotter' help from a partner or the coach.. to let you know if some one leaving for good or new coming in and then be very diligent in subs like you said.

Paper and pencil partner and backup may not be a bad idea either .. to keep record of who hit in what sequence.
