How to score an error and a hit?

Situation: Batter pops up in foul territory. Catcher gets to ball but drops it. Play goes on. Batter eventually singles to reach base and then scores. Official scorer went back and assigned error to the catcher on the dropped pop-up but also awarded a single to the batter. How can I reflect this in iScore? I ended up assigning the error so the earned runs would be correct but that left the batter without a hit and no hit scored against the pitcher. Is there a way to record both in iScore?

For the dropped foul ball, you can use Misc->Assign Error in iScore to assign errors on foul balls.

I cannot change that in the pitch-by-pitch screen, though, is that right? I just tried and it doesn't seem possible.

This is the sort of situation where an error won't be assigned until it's determined whether or not the dropped foul ball affects later plays. I mean, if the batter grounded out on the next pitch...or 5 pitches later...no error would be recorded. Even if he'd reached base, an error might not be assigned if no additional runs scored.

Our understanding is that a dropped foul ball is ALWAYS an error. What changes is whether runs are earned after the error occurs. If the batter goes on to make an out, then earned runs are not effected. If the batter gets on base, then the earned run rules would be the same as if the player made it to base by error. This does not change that the dropped foul ball was an error. (and iScore correctly calculates earned runs based on this rule).

Interesting. I score NCAA games when I attend and checked the NCAA rules which state the same thing...but I rarely see an error actually charged by an official scorer unless the dropped ball ends up resulting in an additional score. The feeling in the booth seems to be that if no "real" damage was done, no error need be reported. That's kind of like scoring an error on a close play in a no-hitter until a "real" hit is given up...then the scorer goes back and changes the "error" from earlier to a hit. In future, I'll be sure to go ahead and record the error right away...rather than wait on the determination from the booth.

Fwiw... you CAN go back and change errors to hits after the fact through the play by play listing (and vice versa), so keeping a no-hitter going on a close play is not a problem and can be changed at a later time if you are so inclined.

.opportunistically using this thread to reprise an old feature request.. ... on the topic of recording and unrecording errors.. sure you can eidt in play by play, but would it not be nice to have an in line place to review/affirm errors and earned/unearned run assignment..

Say a between inning recap screen, ...recaps last inning, hits, runs, errors, number stranded , etc (and offers oppotunity to edit or reverse an error or earned / un earned run) ...such a screen also a great place to call out upcoming batters, next three up are... eliminating 90% of the desire ot have in the hole visibility on the primary scoreing screen...

Yes I know.. on the list.. for consideration...

Yes, that one is still on the list, and has been moving up in priority. :)

We still have some bigger items that are a bit higher (biggest being transferring of data between devices --- games, rosters --- without requiring a transfer of the complete database).

But we will be getting to even more requests soon... and as baseball season begins, look for several more "oldie but goodie" requests to resurface in upcoming releases as well.

Thank you.
