Little league minor pitching rules

Post by Mommacita » Fri Mar 09, 2012 7:41 am

o I score my son's little league games. At their age group no walks are allowed. If a pitcher throws a total of 4 balls to a batter, the count is cleared and the batter’s coach will pitch a maximum of 3 pitches. If the batter fails to hit a ball and reach at least 1st base safely on one of the 3 pitches thrown, the batter will be declared out (“strike out”). There is also a pitch count limit so its important to keep an accurate pitch count. What I do now is substitute the coach for the pitcher if the pitcher throws 4 balls, however, I can't assign the 4th ball to the pitcher as it will force a walk so the pitch count and stats are not accurate. Is there a way around this?

To keep the pitch count right, you can make the final ball be a foul ball. Will mean his balls/strikes will not be right, but it is the simplest workaround to keep pitch totals accurate. We have "coach pitch rules" on our enhancement list for future prioritization, but it is still not high on the list of things to do as the number of users effected by this is much smaller than other items on the list.

As you use the coach (player 10 on the field) to sub for the pitcher , how do you score the play if the pitcher is involved in the "in play" or "out"? Our league has similar rule and the pitcher stays next to the coach to field the play. I'm thinking I would have 10 players (with the coach being one, but doesn't bat), but not sure how to show where the subbed pitcher is positioned.

Thoughts for his work around?

If not doable, then I may just not show the coach subbing and use the "foul ball" work around. If the coach strikes out the player would end up being a part of the pitchers stats which doesn't really help understanding the players true abilities and growth.

BTW, kids participating in baseball is going down drastically. Gamification of this sport is crucial at this age to keep them interested. Kids love seeing their data and levels of their achievements just like playing all the video games available today... So maybe the priority of this should change for the youth.

Not really a need to do stats when the game isn't played in an official way. I'll +1 this when the program is perfect... 8-)

I would use 10 fielders to get through this workaround. Put the coach at short fielder and swap the coach and actual pitcher when need be. Even though not technically correct, it does keep the actual pitcher in the field.
