Dropped ball

Post by Roloyank » Sun Apr 29, 2012 10:38 am

A player in posession of the ball drop it blinded by the sun, is considered defensive error or hit to the batter? The player never touch the ball, simply, he stay under the ball but the sun blind him.

I saw a similar play today in a college game and it was scored a hit by the TV broadcasters and scorekeeper.

Happened in Angels game today to Torii Hunter and they called it an error. He did not even touch the ball but lost sight of it because of the sun at the last second.

I saw the Hunter play, and that scoring surprised me. I think this usually goes as hit, but I think is scorer's judgment.

Just read this on the Hunter Play:

http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ss ... t_153.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hunter, instead, was charged with an error even though he never touched the ball. MLB told the game's official scorers during the off-season to call an error on such plays where a fielder sees the ball, but loses it in the sun.

That's MLB though, and MLB scorekeepers are usually a lot tougher on the players then in a high school game or below because of the ability of those players (or lack of for some of them). But then again, those guys are being paid millions of dollars and they should be making those plays.

However, anything below MLB, that play is a hit. Plain and simple.
