OBPE & Dropped 3rd strike (safe)

Post by highknees69 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 9:15 am

How come a dropped 3rd strike (where the girls is safe by PB or E2) does not show up as a ROE and does not show up in the OBPE stat?

I can't find exactly how OBPE is calculate when it comes to dropped 3rd strikes, but I would assume it's not included in this stat because it does not score as a ROE.

Let me know, thanks.

The focus of both OBP and OBPE is on what the batter actually did to get on base. The intent of including ROE in OBPE is that is is potentially interesting that a player could be hitting so many hard ground balls that errors are being forced by a batter and therefore there could be some statistical significance to including ROE in the calculation.

A dropped third strike is more a reflection of the defense, not the batter.

Yes, you could argue that a very advanced batter could intentionally swing at a pitch that they know will get by the catcher knowing that they could reach base. This would be an extreme exception to the typical case however.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. I wasn't sure how it was scored and why, but this helps.

Now to try and explain it to all the parents. LOL

When viewing team stats, tap the options button in the bottom right and you will be given the option to select stats to view.

Will add that part of the reason reach on third strike would be excluded from OPE... Is simply by definition right or wrong ORB explicitly defines Wild pitches and passed balls as not errors .

Sorry to be a pain, but, I still cant seem to find obpe. Am I looking in the right place?

Team manager - team stats - settings - batting

could this be a device specific stat? I am using an Android phone.

You could also argue that reaching first base on a dropped third strike should be included in the OBPE because it takes both speed and awareness on the part of the batter to get to first safely.

Is HBP included in OBP? how about HBP in OBPE?

Both include HBP.
