Catcher interference and BIP stat

Post by OhioTex » Thu Nov 19, 2015 1:17 am

A tweak may be needed in BIP stat when batter reaches due to catchers interference. Currently BIP is credited when In Play > safe> catcher interference . Is that correct?

Yes. We have defined BIP as any pitch that is not a ball, a strike or a foul ball. For example, hit by pitch is also considered BIP. It is more about keeping track of pitches than at bats.

(iOS version 4.5)

You may want to re look into your definition and the underlying code for BIP for batter reach on CI as it does not appear to be consistent within the program for batting and pitching and it differs from your response.

My original post on CI was in reference to BATTING:BIP but your comment brings up another point- there is both a PITCHING:BIP and a BATTING:BIP. When I tested the two scenarios .. A) Batter reach by HBP and b) Batter reach by CI ..for both BATTING:BIP and PITCHING:BIP - I get different results than expected

when batter reaches by HBP, I get No BIP in IScore for either PITCHING:BIP OR BATTING:BIP - which seems correct for both. But different than your definition . Basically , No ball in play when batter hit by pitch.

However when batter reaches by CI, Pitching BIP is not credited while Batting BIP is credited. I would expect both to be same and both not credited .

I appreciate, batter Reach by CI is an infrequent occurance and the impact to a batters overall BIP rate would not likely be materially impacted.. So I would not consider this a high priority .. Just something for addressing over time
