Data Sharing?

FTMSupport wrote:The data sharing through the web should work with any version of the iPhone. For the Bluetooth data sharing, there are a few restrictions.

1. From Apple: "Bluetooth networking is not supported on the original iPhone or the first-generation iPod Touch"

2. You can not transfer between the iPhone and iPad versions of the application over bluetooth. They have a different application ID, and Apple's built in protocol only talks to applications with the same application ID.

In both of these cases, you should still be able to use the sharing by connecting to an exported copy of the other device's database.
Have you considered a sort of partnership with Bump, of Bump Technologies (http://bu.mp/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) for the purposes of sharing selected games/players/rosters, etc opposed to the current implementation? Bump works currently with the original iPhone as well as the more recent versions. In fact I exchanged contact information with a friend the other day and I didn't even go turn on Bluetooth. I think the app takes care of that behind the scenes, I don't know, it was magic. We bumped with phones in hand and next thing we knew, I had his contact information and he had mine. Very cool possibilities for iScore.

Just asking, cause this app is really cool and could be really useful in satisfying the "can you send me your team roster" or "game data for x date". May not solve the send me your whole database (but could be possible). Anyway, just making a suggestion.

The problem with Bump is that it uses the internet, not Bluetooth. This means folks with iPod Touch will not be able to share data. We are trying to provide a non-internet solution as well as the web based solution.

We may look into the technology more for the Web-enabled folks to make that sharing even simpler, but it would not be able to address the iPod Touch folks.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Think it also works for iPhone to iPad users as well.

It works as long as you have an internet connection --- and will work across devices. The issue we have is that it REQUIRES internet. We have tried to provide both options (Bluetooth for no internet which Bump can not do, and the Web sharing for folks with internet access). Our web sharing also allows people at remote locations to share data. Bump requires folks to be at the same physical location so devices can be bumped.

So the restrictions of Bump would be that you must have internet, and you must also be at the same location as the person you want to share with. If those two requirements are met, then Bump is a great technology.

iTouch requires wiFi as well right?

So Bluetooth works on original iPhone?

I think this is cool but have not tried it. Actually think it will cause more questions on the receiving end since someone trying to receive your data is not there with you and may have questions. But as I said, I have not tried it. Sounds cool though.

I think the use case is that 99% of the time people will want to share data at the ballpark while they are there talking to each other. But hey, your implementation sounds cool.

Later versions of the iPod Touch have Bluetooth; only the 1st gen doesn't.
