Bravo, indeed.

I do appreciate the purely technical reason. Extremely contrived though it may be.

This example is not that contrived. I have seen this happen in youth leagues (not a lot however) where the runner on third either did not return to tag or left early and the throw back in from the outfield goes over the head of the cutoff allowing the runner on second to advance. The runner on third, seeing the runner approaching from second (and in the confusion) keeps going and does not properly return to tag at third. You'd be surprised at some of the situations that youth players can get themselves into that you would never think possible in adult ball.

I may demonstrate my own ignorance here, but in doing so might prove the wisdom of FTM's position.

I have always thought that a batter hitting a fly ball for an out with less than two outs, that advances *any* runner is awarded a sacrifice, even with no runner on 3B (scoring or not). If I understand this thread correctly, that perhaps is not true. Yet, I've entered "sac fly" every time in these situations. FTM's approach allows me to continue along in my state of ignorant bliss, but correctly scores the play. I could see myself scoring a first and third situation where the runner on first advanced on the fly, but the runner on third did not, as a sac fly. That sounds like it is incorrect and this method of scoring keeps the stats clean.....

You are correct plivengood... and you are not the only one that does that. iScore allows you to do this and correctly will not credit a sacrifice to the batter in that situation. It is a VERY common misconception, and much easier for us to just handle it correctly in stats than to try and explain it to everyone that does not know.

A sac fly requires a run to score according to MLB. A sac hit requires a runner to advance and intent on the batter's part!
